Before you send your artwork to print

A design is not finished simply because it looks good on screen. Before you print, make sure it is ready for the way people will see, hold and use it. Start with the final size. Confirm the finished dimensions and orientation before creating the artwork. A business card, folded brochure and rollup display each need a different approach. Give important details room. Keep essential text and logos away from trim and fold areas. Ask the printer for the bleed, safe area and fold requirements for your chosen product. Check every word. Review names, phone numbers, dates, prices and addresses carefully. Ask someone else to read the proof too. Choose suitable images. Use original, clear images at the required print size. Enlarging a small image does not create missing detail. Check that you have permission to use the artwork and photographs. Confirm materials and finishing. Paper, garment size, lamination, binding and other choices influence the result. Agree the specification and quantity before payment or production. Review the final proof. Approve the actual version to be produced, and keep a copy of the agreed specification. If colour accuracy is critical, discuss proofing options with the printer. Have a print project in mind?
